Is it harder for you to work or to rest? I didn’t ask you which you would rather do – most would rather rest – but which do you find easier to do? For me, it is easier to work than to rest. When I’m resting, I feel like I’m wasting my life. So, even on my rare rest days, I have a hard time completely resting (because my mind is still thinking about work).
While it is sinful to be lazy, it is also sinful to be a workaholic. Both of these sins come from forgetting God. A lazy person forgets that God wants to accomplish His purpose THROUGH his labor. A workaholic forgets that it is ultimately God who accomplishes and not his own labor.
From the beginning, God has built into our society a rhythm – 6 days of labor and 1 day of rest. Now, lest you think that 1 day of rest is optional, it certainly was not! God emphatically wanted His people to take that one day off as a show of trust in God.
“You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.” Exodus 31:14
God knew people’s propensity to rely on themselves and walk by sight rather than by faith. A sabbath rest is a sign that ultimately, we trust God to provide what we need.

So, for those of us who have a type A personality, myself included, learn to rest. Truly rest in God and trust Him.
