When I was a child living in Korea, adults would come up to me and ask me who my father was. They would never ask me for my name, but who my father was. In that culture, you were identified not as an individual, but by whom you are associated with – especially your family.
I see the same cultural backdrop at work in the Old Testament. King Saul asks David, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.” 1 Samuel 17:58If you are asked who you are, your answer should be, “I am a child of the King of kings and Lord of lords.” That is fundamentally who you are. You have no identity apart from God. It will not do for you to state your name or your occupation or your family. Your true identity is how you are related to God who is the ultimate reference point.
A Christian is one whom, at the same time, has no self-esteem and the greatest self-esteem. He has no self-esteem because he’s nothing – literally nothing – without God. But at the same time, he has the greatest of self-esteems because he belongs to the God of the universe.
Who are you truly? Remind yourself daily.
