One way we know our children are growing up is when they ask, “Mommy (Daddy), what do you want me to give to you?” When they are little, they never think of giving their parents something, but only receiving. My children at 6 and 4 have not yet asked me that question. I guess we will have to wait a few more years.

One way to know we are growing in Christ is that we consider what we can give to the Lord. We pray, “Lord, what do you want me to give you? I would like to do something nice for you.” Have you prayed that prayer yet? Or are you still at the stage of only asking Him to give you?

The difference between king Saul, the first King of Israel and King David, the second king is that David had it in his heart to do something for the Lord. He wanted to build God a house! (2 Sam. 7:2) As far as I know, it never occurred to King Saul to do something for the Lord. He was only interested in taking from Him. David was called the man after God’s own heart. Saul, not so much…

Let us put off our childish ways and consider what we might do for the Lord as David did. When we do that we might realize that God actually has something for us. In David’s case, God told him He will build David a house rather than David building God a house. And here, the “house” is referring to a dynasty that will never end. We know how that story went. Jesus Christ came from his lineage and became the eternal King. Thus, God’s promise to David was kept. David just wanted to build God a house, and God ended up giving David an eternal kingdom! What a God! We can never outgive God!
