What is the difference between someone saying to you, “Come to me” and “Return” to me”? You immediately pick up on the fact that “come to me” is for first timers and “return to me” is for those who already belonged. I find it fascinating that the Bible contains both phrases from God to us.

In one sense, we are to return to God. We were created to enjoy our freedom in Him in the Garden of Eden. But we lost that freedom by insisting our own “paradise” which wasn’t a paradise at all. And ever since then, God has been wanting us to return to Him. He went so far as to send His Son to come look for us so that we will return to Him. I believe this is the reason why we long for a home whether we know Christ or not. It’s written in our hearts. (Jer. 31:21)

In another sense, we are to come to God for the first time. We are the children of rebellion, born in sin. We do not belong to God. But Christ bids us to come to Him and lay down our burden of sin and bondage. (Matt 11:28)

How good of God to not only call us to Him but also re-call us to Him. He does not give up on us. The longer we delay in coming to Him, the more bondage and damage we suffer. Let Him heal you. Let Him make you whole. Let Him give you joy like you have never known before!

Come to Him!
Return to Him!
