When distractions become the main thing, we are in trouble.
During this holiday season with all the hustle and bustle of sales, gifts, traveling, etc, it is so easy to be distracted. Our mind is busy and our soul is in unrest. We are constantly looking around for just a little more of the distraction we’ve already put ourselves in. But we must stop and ask, “what is the main thing?” If distractions exist, by definition, the main thing from which the distractions come, must also exist. So, what is the main thing?
Some will say, “Family.” That’s important.
Some will say, “Friends and relationships.” That’s important, too.
Some will say, “Having our ends meet and provided for.” Yes. that’s important, too.
But none of those things are the main thing. I believe the main thing mus be this:
“You have said, ‘Seek my face.’
My heart says to you,
‘Your face, Lord, do I seek.’
Hide not your face from me.”
Ps. 27:8-9
God’s face represents the very inner depth of God. Seeking His face means seeking intimacy and personal knowledge of Him. It is also a fearful thing to do so. The Old Testament saints were not allowed to look at God’s face because they would die! However, with Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are enabled to go to the inner sanctuary of God and seek His face.
Turn off that TV for a little while and seek God’s face.
Put away your iPads and iPhones and seek God’s loving gaze.
Step away from Facebook and delight in the image of yourself in God’s eyes.
Don’t have the time? Whatever else you are spending time on is a distraction. You are not an animal that you should just eat, work, sleep, and defecate. You were made for God. Give Him the glory!
