I want to be open with you about one of my struggles. There ARE times when I think God is not enough.
I know and I preach that God is the greatest treasure there is, but there are times when I think “Is God really the greatest treasure there is? Is He really enough? Would I really be satisfied with Him and Him alone?”
I don’t believe I am alone in thinking like this. I believe every Christian who still sins – which is everyone – thinks like this. If one didn’t think like this, then he would be perfect and sinless. Sin is simply replacing God as the ultimate in our lives even for a moment, but why would we do that unless we believed that sinful act was better than God at least for that moment? The very fact that we still sin shows that God has not taken His rightful place as the supreme in every moment for all times.
I believe when we get to heaven and we are completely redeemed, we won’t have that issue anymore. He will be the greatest, supreme good all the time and we won’t want to take our eyes off Him even for a moment. Why would we? There isn’t anything better than Him even for a fleeting moment.
But we are still here on earth now and we still fight our old sinful nature. But the important thing is that we are fighting. As long as it’s a struggle, it’s a good sign. When there is no struggle with sin, we are in trouble…
Let us remind ourselves once more – God is truly the supreme good. He is better than our fleeting moments of sin. We must rewrite this in our hearts every morning because our sinful nature erases it every morning! A day is coming when we won’t have to remind ourselves anymore for we will know it and will never forget it.
“O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you…” Ps. 63:1
One day, we won’t have to thirst for God for we will be completely satisfied. Until then, fight! (To rewrite on our hearts every moment that God is the greatest treasure there is)
