John 21:4-6,9-10,12–Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.“...9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.“…12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.”…
After fishing all night to catch nothing, Jesus has provided what the disciples had toiled all night to get. It was His guidance and direction that caused them to get an abundance of fish. But the fact Jesus had a meal in place for them without needing their catch, tells them that they need Him knowing what they desire and need, but it will come through communion with Him…
Jesus’ provision was directly from His hand, and indirectly from their obedience. Jesus invites them to bring their fish to join His, with both provisions being clearly from Him. When the disciples brought it in from the sea, and the net preserved the blessing, then they knew this was the Lord…(John 21:11)
John was sensitive to the Lord’s blessing, after toiling all night and catching nothing without being directed by Jesus. But Peter also received this revelation because he acted by faith, jumping into the water after Jesus! In seeing that they have this abundance of fish, and fish Jesus has already prepared. He calls them to bring their blessing to add to what He has, so they can enjoy and commune in the blessings of the Lord! (John 21:7)
Much like the disciples, we can work hard with expectations for a great return and find discouragement from “empty nets”. But as believers, Christ so desires intimate communion with us, that a life lived without faith in Him as “Life” separates us from such communion. Trying to cultivate great results without submitting to a great God, clashes not only with His glory, but His heart to commune with us in how much He longs to share His love as our Provider.
Continue striving to see our Lord as someone who desires not only to meet our needs, but be our ultimate need!-In His Love, Ld
