Romans 13:14But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

When we think of making “provisions” in our lives whether that is for our own well being or family, it generally means doing what is noble and necessary for basic livelihood.  So naturally making provisions for ourselves and others would never be looked down upon, but rather encouraged…
Yet spiritually, the apostle Paul acknowledges believers being occupied with a body, but should strive to find our livelihood in Christ.  So he exhorts us to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ”, because without initiating that desire to live by the Spirit, we will live preoccupied in the direction of our flesh, and automatically make provisions to live by it’s desires…(Galatians 5:16)
Now in this context, our fleshly desires oppose putting on the Lord Jesus Christ.  So to make provisions, is to literally “give foresight or have something in mind” to fulfill our desires of the flesh.  For instance, as a “family fast” my wife decided that we will refrain from “sweets”.  But if I buy a stash of cookies just in case I get weak, then I have made provisions for my flesh.  That no matter what I tell myself, I already have in mind that desire being fulfilled, torturing myself…
In essence, seeking “to put on the Lord Jesus Christ” is the only chance we have to fight what our flesh wants.  Because the victory over our flesh is in the Spirit, so we as Christians are in a “tug of war” because the flesh and Spirit oppose one another!  Yet if there is no acknowledgement to fight temptation by the grace of God in the Spirit, then we readily succumb to it in our flesh…(2 Corinthians 10:4, Galatians 5:17)
Being “weak” over a batch of cookies can seem innocent in comparison to the many struggles I have encountered, as I’m sure you have.  But putting on the Lord Jesus Christ can be the difference between being preserved in our life or ruining it!  So test yourself whether or not you have skipped Paul’s exhortation for various reasons, to settle for making provisions for the flesh.  The alarming part of our flesh is that it never gets enough, it’s greed goes beyond what we made provisions for. (Jeremiah 17:9, 1 Corinthians 10:11-13) .LD
