There are situations when we think, “How can anything good come out of this?” That is because we cannot see the future. Although we do not know and may never know why somethings happen in our lives until we go to heaven, we can see glimpses of what God might be doing from the Bible.
Jacob is told by his sons that they have to take his remaining favorite son, Benjamin, to Egypt to prove to the lord of Egypt that they are not spies. (Genesis 42)
Put yourself in Jacob’s shoes. He already lost his favorite son, Joseph, years ago. Now, his others sons want to take away his other favorite son Benjamin. If he doesn’t consent, then he will lose his other son, Simeon, who is in prison until the brothers come back with Benjamin. This is bad. From Jacob’s perspective, nothing good could come out of this! So, he refuses and says, “My son will not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If anything happens to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.” (Gen. 42:38)
Do you hear the agony in his voice? Jacob, from his vantage point, could not see how this could be for good. But we are given privy to what was actually happening. That Egyptian “lord” that was causing trouble for him was really his son Joseph! What he considered hopeless and evil was about to turn into his happiest moment.
What we consider hopeless and evil might turn out to be our happiest moment.
Trust not our vision which is so limited. Trust the good God who sees the whole picture.
