I understood “God is with you” very differently than what it is. I thought that meant that everything you do will turn out to be successful, you will never fail, you will never suffer, and everything will go your way. But looking at Jacob’s life, it was anything but!
God promises Jacob: “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land.” Genesis 28:15
If you heard such a promise from God, what do you expect would happen to you from that point on?
After this promise, Jacob is cheated by his own uncle. He marries two sisters without meaning to. They are in a perpetual competition with each other, and they use Jacob for their own gain. Eventually, things got so bad with his uncle that he had to flee in the middle of the night!
Through all this, God was with him! Is that what you would’ve expected. I know if you are like me, you are thinking, “If that’s what would happen to a man whom God is with, I’m not sure if I want God to be with me!”
God’s purpose for us is not comfort. His purpose for us is Christlikeness. And suffering does a better job of bringing us to Christlikeness than comfort.
Don’t be surprised that sufferings come your way. That’s a sign that God is with you.
