As you look back at your life, how have you seen God’s steadfast love on your life?
Have you connected your past history with God’s love and guidance?
In Psalm 136, you read the refrain, “for his steadfast love endures forever” repeated many times. But before each refrain is an act that God performed on Israel’s behalf. So the psalmist is thanking God for His steadfast love on each event in Israel’s history.
So, I used that format to thank God for His hand on my life.
God brought Christianity to North Korea 100 years ago,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
He let my grandmother hear the gospel and become a follower,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
He also let my mother hear the gospel and become a follower,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who led my mother to teach me God’s ways,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who led my family to this land,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
…
I went on like this thanking God for guiding me and leading me to this point. This gave me a new appreciation for how God guided and led me each step of the way. It also put current things in perspective. Things that I’m anxious about and praying about. After this prayer, I began to think, “If God has led and guided me thus far, why wouldn’t He lead and guide me the rest of the way? All I need to do is to rest in Him and be obedient.”
Look back. Count the ways that God has led you to this point. Be specific about how God led you. Name the events God has used to bring you to Himself. And thank Him.
