I’ve come to realize that there are certain things we can do that God cannot do. You heard me right. We, human beings, can do certain things that God cannot do. This is a very disturbing fact as we always think of God as being able to do everything we can and then infinitely more. But that’s not always the case.

For example, God cannot let sin slide by Him. You and I can. If you saw someone hurt someone else, you don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to get involved. And even if the sin was done to you, you can simply choose to let it go. For example, if someone cussed you out on I-5, you can let it slide and not do anything. But God can’t. He has to punish sin!

12 And you shall set limits for the people all around, saying, ‘Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death. (Exodus 19:12)

In this passage, God seems almost worried that some people will go up the mountain because if anyone does, He HAS TO kill him and He doesn’t want to! So, like a worried Father, He gives passioned plea for people to not come up. It’s almost as if He cannot control His anger against them if they were to sin and He doesn’t want to be incited.

It is so easy for you and me to say, “Oh well, I can let that one slide by.” But God can’t. Why? Because He’s perfectly holy and just. You and I are not. That’s why we can let a sin go unpunished (except when it takes away what truly matters to us!). However, God would be unjust if He lets even a small sin go unpunished. He must punish sin!

Then, why don’t we die instantly the moment we sin? Why does God seem to be turning a blind eye to so much sin in this world, in me and you?

Because He punished sin through His Son. “For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Cor. 5:21)

All of the punishment that you can I deserved had been poured out upon His Son. Once and for all. Slaying of the eternal Son of God was enough of a punishment to cover for ALL sins past, present and future.

So, don’t think our sins go unpunished. It’s already been punished in His Son. Let’s not add to the sin.
