Certain acts get at the heart of God more than other. God has a soft spot for those who will take the place of another.
Judah, out of all his brothers, is blessed most. He didn’t necessarily see this blessing in his lifetime, but his tribe is the one Jesus came out of… This is honor beyond all honors. To have the Son of God, the Deliverer, the Messiah, come out of your loins, there is no greater honor. (Genesis 49 records the blessing he would receive according to Jacob)
But what did Judah do to deserve this? He wasn’t a good man. He frequented prostitutes. His sons were so wicked that God put them to death! But there is one thing that he did right. He volunteered to take the place of Benjamin if he couldn’t bring him back alive to his father. (Genesis 44:18-34)
I believe this act impressed the heart of God. I can find no other reason in the scripture why God would bless him more than other brothers. Of course, God can select anyone to bless regardless of their works. But God will sometimes choose to bless someone who shows extraordinary faith and/or sacrifice.
Perhaps this act of substituting for someone else reminds God of the ultimate sacrifice His Son would make on our behalf…
When an opportunity comes to you to take the place of another (to sacrifice and/or to take the blame), do so.
The world’s attitude is “I sacrifice you to serve me.” Our attitude ought to be, “I sacrifice myself to serve you.”
That is most Christlike. God will be pleased.
