Our problem is not that we do not worship God – we do! – but that we worship other gods as well. We may worship God on Sundays but we worship money, family, and entertainment during the week.
This was the problem with the Israelites. They worshipped God as only one of many gods.
The Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God that were not right. From watchtower to fortified city they built themselves high places in all their towns. 2 Kings 17:9
So, on the outside, they acted like they worshipped the God of Israel, but on the inside, they worshipped other gods. But of course, this cannot be. You cannot worship multiple gods. Worship by definition is valuing that which is most precious to you, and therefore you can truly worship only one god.
This is why the first commandment is, “Thou shall have no other god.” And the Israel’s God was unique in that He insisted on being the only God in our lives. And that is also the reason why He and His followers are consistently hated as well. If we said our God is only one of many they can follow, then there would be no problem. But we say that our God is the ONLY God to the EXCLUSION of other gods.
How many other “gods” are there in our lives? What are we pursuing, relying on, or finding our hope in, other than the true God? Where does your security lie? Your ability? Your bank account? Your assets? Your children?
Worship the Lord only!
