Romans 16:25–Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26-but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen
We all know that there is a huge difference between knowing what to do, and actually doing it. Not knowing what to do, is what makes knowledge so important. But if our knowledge is never put into action, we end up “mentally ascending” to things, that we don’t actually do. So we can be very knowledgeable, but not very loving with our knowledge…(1 Corinthians 8:1-3)
Usually when we use the phrase, “it’s the thought that counts”. We don’t mean, that the mental ideas going on in our head is what matters, but the thought behind the act is what matters! Without the affectionate action, to say to my wife, “I thought about getting you something” but not actually do it, doesn’t go well. I know from experience…
Why do I say this? Because to know the gospel mentally, “that Christ died for the forgiveness of our sins” is great to know! Some people in the world have no idea, hence the reason for preaching and missions. But for us to know it, and not strive to “act out” of that knowledge, should make us question our hearts before God, daily? (John 3:16-18, Hebrews 3:13, 2 Peter 1:8-9)
Because to love our neighbor as ourselves, should cause us to forgive, have mercy, show compassion, all such “fruits” are actions! These actions we do, because we have experienced them from God! So when the apostle Paul says, “his gospel is able to strengthen us”, he means for it to provoke actions that confirm Jesus as Lord. So whatever that requires, I am strengthened by the gospel of grace to do it! (Philippians 2:12-13)
I believe the gospel being so available in our country, has made us “dull of hearing”. Because we know it, we can think “that’s enough”. But reciting scriptures is not the same as living them! No one is subject to be more guilty than a pastor, preacher, and teacher of the Bible such as myself. So my prayer for you, in knowing this is such a struggle, make sure you are not just “mentally ascending” to God’s Word, but striving to live it! (James 3:1)
