I just finished a conversation on the phone with a man suffering. His questions were full of why’s. “Why would God make me suffer if He loves me?” “Why would He not listen to my prayers if I am His child?” “Why is He not taking me home so that my family doesn’t suffer with me?” etc…
I do not have good answers to these questions. But when I read the Bible, I’m glad that the Bible is not simplistic about the complex nature of this life. There are events described in the Bible that just baffles the mind. And I love it because this life is like that. It never works out the way we think it should…
Take David for example. God anointed him to be king after rejecting Saul. But Saul doesn’t die for another 40 years! And David has to make several questionable maneuvers to secure his kingship. Well, if God anointed him, then why does it take so long for him to become king? And why does David make these questionable moves to secure himself – such as acting like a madman to deceive his enemies?
I find comfort in all these unanswered questions. Because the Bible deals with all these perplexities of life. And although we do not get answers, we get something better. We get God who is absolutely in charge of all these perplexing and confusing events and happenings around us.
The upshot is this: Do we trust God? Do we understand that God is sovereign over all things including things that seem chaotic and out of control? And can we rest in Him, so that we can have peace even while all hell is breaking loose?
Restore us, God of armies;make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved.Ps. 80:7
