“How can I find out God’s calling on my life?” was the question a young man I was meeting with yesterday asked. And here was my answer: 1) Consider your giftings, 2) Pay attention to your passion, and 3) Will it meet the needs of the world?
As you are considering a career path or searching for the next job, consider these factors. The wrong questions to ask before landing a job would be: 1) Does it pay much? 2) What benefits? 3) Is it an easy commute?
Most people will take a job that will be of maximum benefit to themselves. The underlying question (as everything else) is “What’s in it for me?” We assume we are the center of the universe. But as Christians, we know we are not. God is the center. Therefore, even the underlying assumption before we choose a vocation must change.
“Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, and some for dishonorable. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.” 2 Tim 2:20-21We are called a vesselA cup or a bowl. A bowl’s purpose is not in itself but bound up in what it contains. Therefore, as vessels, our purpose is not for our own fulfillment but to serve the master.
Keep yourself clean. Throw off whatever enslaves you and makes your tastebuds dull toward God. Then, you will be used for honorable purposes.
