Matthew 26:43-44And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
One of the great things that companionship gives us is support.  The kind of support that reaches beyond tangible things like money, but emotional and spiritual support, that gets to the “heart” of who we are.  Yet the lack of support maybe one of the most disappointing things we can lack from our companion(s), which can bring about a feeling of abandonment…
Surely if Jesus Christ at a time of weakness looked for companionship, we should be at peace with our tendency to do the same.  Yet though we may share in this same desire for support from people, it was what Jesus knew about people that caused Him not to have His “anchor” in people…
In this distressing time at the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus is confronting going to the cross.  Knowing how stressful it is for Him to embrace, it is not as stressful for the disciples, because it is not them going through it!  Though Jesus looks for them for support, He doesn’t berate them for not being able to stay awake through such a time. Though Jesus would’ve like to be supported by His disciples, this time was set aside between Him and Father, alone…
Have you found yourself terribly disappointed at the lack of empathy from people who you not only expected to support you, but you wanted to support you?  As disappointing as it may seem, it shows how limited our capacity is to always be supportive, which is why we can come to the Father like Jesus did.  I urge you to let go of thinking you need people’s support who are “falling asleep” why you are suffering.  It may be because God wants that kind of seeking for support to be in Him alone?
