Here I am sitting at Starbucks writing this devotional and all around me are people seated in pairs using “words” to communicate with one another.

Have you thought about the importance of words? Without words, not only are we not able to communicate, we cannot even think. What sets human beings apart from animals is the ability to use words to form thoughts and communicate those thoughts. Pictures and videos can supplement words, but they can never replace words. Even wordless movies make sense to us because we have previously used words to communicate the ideas that are depicted in those movies.
But there is another reason why words are important. It is how God decided to reveal Himself to us! “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) It is interesting that God didn’t use “Images” to reveal Himself but rather words. And if you think it’s just a random choice, God specifically forbids us to represent Him through images: “You shall not make for yourself a carved image.”
The primary way God reveals Himself to us is through His word. The word that is ubiquitous nowadays! It’s in your phone. It’s in your tablet. In your purse, closet, car, etc. Everywhere, perhaps, except in our hearts…
If we are neglecting the word, then we are neglecting Jesus. If we are neglecting the word, we are neglecting the very reason for which we were created.
You cannot and will not survive as a Christians without the word of God read, memorized, and applied in your life. How do you defeat sin and Satan without the only offensive weapon (which is the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God?)
Do not be deceived. You are dying if you are not consuming the word everyday. (And if you have no desire for it, you might be dead…) Ask, beg, plead with the Lord to make the word pleasurable to you.
