I’m a bottom line type of person. In pretty much whatever situation I’m in, I’m asking the question, “What is the point?” or “What is the bottom line?” or “Ultimately, what is this leading to?”

I think that’s what made me choose being a pastor over engineer also. In my twenties, I thought about what will ultimately make the most difference in the world. I can be an engineer and help improve people’s daily lives, or I can be a pastor and have the opportunity to make eternal difference in people’s lives. The choice seemed obvious. I went for the ultimate. At least in my mind…

This tendency also kicks in when I’m reading the Bible. I’m constantly asking myself the question of the ultimate. “What is this ultimately about?” And I’m glad that Jesus also seemed to be asking that question. (Anyway I can be like Him!)

“Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness.” (Luke 11:33-34)

I never knew what the above passage meant until today! I thought it was talking about us being the light of the world and being a good example, but it is not talking about being the light but rather seeing the light. It is about our EYES being the light. What does that mean?

In the passage immediately before this, Jesus says “behold” twice – Luke 11:31, 32. But behold what? What should we see? He says, referring to Himself, “Behold, something greater than Solomon is here.” And then “Behold, something greater than Jonah is here.” So, what He wants us to see is Jesus Himself. And He says that if we have the eyes to see Him (healthy), our body will be full of light, but if not, then it will be full of darkness.

What do we have to see? Jesus

What is the purpose of life? Jesus

What is the source of happiness Jesus

What is the ultimate good we want? Jesus

What is the bottom line? Jesus.

Your trials are about Jesus. Your suffering is about Jesus. Your family is about Jesus. Human history is about Jesus. Even our sins are about Jesus.

Do you see Him?
