Matthew 5:14-“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
As a Christian you can probably recall a few times where you were in a place that did not seem welcoming, or had an atmosphere that wasn’t attractive.  Yet as a Christian did you feel powerless to infect the environment to be the exact opposite?
Jesus says to us that we are the light of the world.  Giving us a distinct identity and purpose for the world we are in.  He implies by calling Christians “the light of the world”, that the world in itself is dark. Jesus separates us from the world not by our works primarily, but by being a new creature in Him.  Then because we are new creatures in Him, we do works that expose us to be light.
But what kind of works do we do?  Especially as we move through day to day life.  As a church goer it is possible to limit good works to things we do in church, or for the church, or for people in the church.  But what separates the Christian as Jesus describes on the Sermon on the Mount, is the heart and mind of a Christian.  How we are to see the world, and how we are to respond to it everyday, because it is dark and we are not!
So the challenge Jesus presents to us, is whether or not we are children of light, because if we are, it cannot be hidden!  Just allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you in the things you do and how you do them, makes your light shine, whether we realize it or not.  The goal is to always be intentional as light, in other words being in close communion with God.  Because we are called to love people who need light in such a dark world.
