If you find yourself in a spiritual funk, examine your life to see if you had put your hope in improved circumstances more than in God.

A “funk” usually follows a spiritual high. The Lord was good to you and has even shown you something extraordinary. And you expected things to be different – better! But it didn’t turn out that way. And you find yourself wondering, “What was the point of that experience if not followed by better circumstances?”

In Exodus, the Israelites had seen the greatest miracles of God one after the other. The last one was the parting of the Red Sea and swallowing of the Egyptian army with the water. Finally, they were freed from oppression and threat of death. They certainly expected everything to turn out for their favor. But immediately, they are faced with the problem of having no water to drink for 3 days! And they grumble against God… (Exodus 15:22)

They kept making the mistake of thinking God is more interested in changing their circumstances than changing them. God didn’t extract the Israelites to put them in a better place, necessarily, but to change them to be God’s people so that they can shine the light to the world. But they only thought of their circumstances and grumbled against God when they didn’t improve.

How much are you and I like the Israelites in the wilderness! How have you been dealing with your wilderness experience so far? How many of our prayers has God answered in the past and yet we still complain to Him because He won’t answer the one we happened to be facing right at this moment…

Believing in God means this:
1) Believing that He is good. (Has our best interest in mind)
2) Believing that His way is better than ours. (So that we can hold on when things go awry)
3) Believing what He said will happen will happen. (His promises will come true)

This whole life is a wilderness experience. Don’t be like the Israelites in the desert who had the attention span of a gnat. Remember God’s goodness in the past and apply them in your current circumstances.

See you guys Sunday,
