I just read this morning about Samson. You know, the freakishly strong man who was brought down by a girl named Delilah?

I’m not sure what the Bible is trying to teach through that man. I sat there and thought long and hard, “Why is this in the Bible?” It certainly doesn’t fit our Christian worldview. Consider these facts:

– He was chosen BEFORE he was born to be used by God and yet he turns out to be an immoral man. (There goes our God-can-only-use-clean-vessels argument)
– God raises this man up to judge a more wicked people – the philistines.
– This man stays with Delilah even though it is very obvious she’s trying to kill him (Was he that blind in love?)
– The Lord leaves him just as his hair is cut (It wasn’t his hair that gave him strength. It was the Lord. But to confuse the matter, the Lord leaves him as his hair is cut making us think that it was his hair that gave him strength).

So confusing because things don’t neatly fall into places. But one thing we can learn. It was a very confusing time for the Israelites during that time. It was because they didn’t know right from wrong. They forgot God and their moral compass was totally broken. Yet, we see God dealing with that generation somehow still delivering His people even though they were wicked, using imperfect leaders.

Sin messes everything up. It makes for confusing times. If we are confused today as to why God would work in certain ways, it’s probably because our sins have made things so convoluted… Sin complicates things.

One thing is for sure though. God is in control. He is good. And He will deliver those who love Him.
