I’ve been thinking a lot about delighting in God, lately. Perhaps some of you are discouraged by that. You do not know what it means when someone like myself – a pastor – says he delights in God. You don’t really enjoy reading the Bible – you have to force yourself to do it. You don’t really enjoy listening to sermons – except when it’s funny and relevant to your life. Hearing about the cross and the resurrection is just same ole same ole… “Tell me something I don’t know so that it will be at least interesting!”
Those were my exact attitudes. I didn’t understand when someone said she has a personal relationship with Jesus. How? Do you hear His voice? Does He talk back to you when you pray? How do you know it’s Jesus talking to you? And what do you mean that you delight in Jesus?
I think I’m just beginning to get it now. This, after 24 years of being a Christian! I actually enjoy the early mornings and reading the Bible. Two things I used to hate… But it took a long time. God has finally brought me to a point where I enjoy Him for Him.
But today, I was reminded of something I’ve forgotten. And that is, God delights in me! In you!
Isa 62:4-5, “….or the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married. 5 As a young man marries a maiden, so will your sons marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you.”
I’ve been so focused on delighting in God, I forgot that God delights in me! Can you believe it? God delights in me. He delights in you! He gets the kind of happy thoughts you get when you think about your loved one – your spouse, your bf/gf, your children, etc!
He’s not mad at you. He’s not disappointed in you. He’s not rolling His eyes at you. He’s not sighing at you. He delights in you because He sees His Son in you! Don’t you want to increase His delight by becoming more like His Son?
Let increasing God’s delight be your delight.
