When bad things happen to us, we have two reactions. 1) We feel guilty because we think God is punishing us for something wrong we have done. Or 2) We feel puzzled or angry because we feel we haven’t done anything to deserve it. So, when bad things happen, either we feel guilty or angry.
Both reactions are wrong if we are the children of God. The right reaction is: God loves me and thus treating me like His child. Oh, and do expect difficult things to happen to you. It is a sign that you ARE a child of God.
Be gracious to me, God, for a man is trampling me;he fights and oppresses me all day long.My adversaries trample me all day,for many arrogantly fight against me.Ps. 56:1-2
This was David, a man chosen and used by God. Yet, he had known many difficulties in his life. Of course, some of it, he had brought upon himself (through his sin with Bathsheba). But others are simply God molding him and shaping him to conform to His image because He loves him.
When bad things happen to you (accidents, illness, loss of job, rebellious children, divorce, etc), let your first reaction be, “God’s got this. Even this, God will use for my own good.”
That is leaning on His promise and His goodness. “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” Hebrews 12:6
But be sure and come to God when difficulties come. His purpose is to draw you near to Him.
