Have you ever thought, “If God is really there, why wouldn’t He do this for me?” Or, “Why wouldn’t God make this right if He really is powerful and loving?”
Those are questions serious enough to make us leave God and not follow Him anymore. Yet, the disciples who were with Jesus for 3 years had those very thoughts. I know so because they DID leave Him at the most critical point of His life. They must’ve been so confused and confounded when Jesus was arrested. It didn’t make sense to them. They couldn’t understand how the Son of God could be arrested.
I was struck by how they reacted when they saw Jesus walk on water and the calm the sea. They worshiped Him and said, “Truly You are the Son of God!” (Matthew 14:32)
Then, why did they all fall away when Jesus was arrested? Because it didn’t make sense to them. They couldn’t make sense out of this powerful Son of God being arrested to be crucified. “If He really is God, why doesn’t He just free Himself and make this wrong right?”, they must’ve thought.
Aren’t those the thoughts we have as well? In the face of tragedy, we ask, “If He is God, then why….?” It’s because we don’t understand. We want God to act like we do, and do exactly what we would do.
But He wouldn’t be God if He did. His ways are not our ways, nor His thoughts not our thoughts.
But we know this. He is more loving than we are. He loves us more than we love ourselves or our children or anybody else for that matter. And He is all powerful. And in the end, it will become all clear to us as to why He acted the way He did, and be in full agreement that it was the right move.
Until then, we must trust Him. He did not spare His own Son for us. How much more will He give us all (good) things? (Romans 8:32)
