Psalm 78:70-71–He chose David his servant

The mentality to want more than we can handle starts early in life.  With young children wanting to be older, and teenagers wanting to be adults. It seems that we can’t wait to get to a place where we receive more privileges, opportunities and recognition.  Yet with such desires, this mentality rarely considers the kind of heart needed to manage such opportunities…

Implicit in God choosing David and calling him to nurse baby sheep, is the notion that it is wisdom to test a person, with what would be considered a “menial task” instead of a monumental one.  But why?  God knows that it is never the position, title, or place in life that matters, but the heart of the individual in that place.  David had an upright heart nursing sheep and leading a nation!

The sin of pride generally wants the highest position, in order to be the most recognized or have more than the next person, which can be a great motivator in striving for a “monumental” position in life.  But God chose David because of his heart towards Him.  That it didn’t matter if David was nursing baby sheep or leading a nation, his anchor wasn’t recognition, it was the heart of God.

Test yourself, whether or not the value of what you do, or where you are in life is the measure of your contentment?  Because God looks at the heart and may move people from “menial” positions to “monumental” ones, because He knows the integrity of their heart.  Can God trust you with a promotion, more influence, and recognition?  If not, then it would be better to stay doing what is “menial” to work on your heart, than looking for more recognition and being insecure as a king, like Saul…
