James 1:25–But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
Yesterday I was watching an infomercial where a lady was selling a “divine clock”. This clock reads aloud a different scripture every hour. So the lady began her sales pitch as to how refreshing it is to wake up each morning and be “inspired”. Which is not a bad thing, but it evokes a deeper question. Inspired to do what?
Inspiration speaks more to a feeling to do something, “to be moved”. So we could be inspired to do what we want, instead of doing what is required? So when it comes to being a doer of anything, what is our intent? Because we could hear all the inspirational scriptures we want, but if our intent in hearing them is not worship, which provokes doing what is required from God, what is the point?
This is the point James makes when he speaks about being “a hearer” or “a doer” of the Word. He uses the example of looking into a mirror, with the intent to do something about your look if something is wrong. But if the intent is not to do anything when you go to the mirror, why go (James 1:24)? So if there is no intent to worship God, in hearing, speaking, or preaching the Word, what is the point? Our religion is deemed worthless, because hearing produces no “fruit”, where as doing does…(James 1:27)
Speaking from experience in studying a lot of Word. It is too easy for me to study for “duty sake” instead of for Christ sake. This is why you can know the Bible front to back, or hear sermons all your life and still be unfruitful! Because evidence of godliness comesby doing what you read, hear, or quote from the Word. Our character will not be perfect, but it should surely be distinctive from the world, who has no intent to hear or do the Word!
In His Love, Ld
