Psalm 7:14
4 Behold, the wicked man conceives evil
and is pregnant with mischief
and gives birth to lies.

One of the things that I think is very sneaky for Christians to consider and battle against is our expectations from the Lord. That it is possible to have expectations from God that He never promised. Generally our expectations that we conceive come from a desire that we think would be great for us! But is it great for God and His purpose for us?

If we are not careful we can conceive things in our minds that grow and ultimately come to past and “give birth” that started out as a lie. We then could find ourselves disappointed in God, when in reality we should be disappointed in the lie we believed!

David here is contrasting the righteous and wicked man, and now in these verses describes how the wicked man without God’s Word operates. They first conceive a thought that did not originate with God. They then allow it to grow or become “pregnant” with an idea of implementing it. Lastly they give birth to the lie, either by mouth or by action. Either way it started with a thought that was never checked by God and His Truth.

Generally as we live longer, we can think about thoughts “conceived” that didn’t quite workout like we planned, helping us reconsider our unchecked thoughts. Dashed hopes, plans, and expectations should lead us to the Word of God an allow Him to redefine what we hope, expect, and plan for. Only the Word can cast down the “high places of our imagination” that come against the knowledge of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:4,5)
