Psalm 51:4
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment.
We really can’t glorify God in our life until we consent to Him being the lonely authority as to what is truly wrong or right in our life. David’s whole framework in this Psalm is wanting to live a life that glorifies God, not him being right in what he did or wants to do. That would be living to glorify himself. In living like that we never need to repent like David because who justifies us is not God but ourselves.
Ask yourself if you measure what is right by what God says about it, or what you think about it? Generally what we think about what do we have a justification for, trying to clear ourselves of any guilt from what we said or did. Now as Christians in living for Christ and His glory we certainly don’t stop there, that would be “suppressing the truth”. So as true Christians we seek guidance from the Holy Spirit’s conviction to repent, or be encouraged in what we said or did, but we never allow ourselves to be The ruling Judge of being justified.
Our desire to be right rather God glorifying, is what we all come into the world with as sinners. But what grace does is rescue us from trying so hard to justify ourselves and be right so we don’t have to deal with guilt, by allowing us to freely repent to the Lord and admit we’re wrong and be forgiven! Opening our eyes from our sinful desire to deny the truth and hide behind our own way of being “right”.
Let the gospel rule your heart in a way that you live with not trying to be “right” over trying to be God glorifying. When you live in peace with God in His grace than you allow people to be “right” if they think they are., Because our goal is like David’s, for Him alone to be justified and blameless when He judges.
In His Love, Ld
