John 16:33-I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
From this passage, Jesus does not leave the disciples destitute in the harshness of reality, but does tell them the hard truth of it, while leaving them with His presence in the promise of the Holy Spirit. Also leaving them with another promise to strengthen their belief, that their peace will be in Him and He has overcome the world…
If Jesus had not been victorious, then what confidence and peace would we have in His claim for the disciples to find their peace in Him? They were instructed to find their peace in Jesus because He has overcome and He is victorious! Which means our confidence and peace comes from trusting Jesus throughout tribulations in the world, not being alleviated from them.
When we do not trust and believe Jesus for peace as the victor over Satan and the world, our hearts are troubled, living oppressed under the circumstances and challenges of life…(John 14:1,27)
The best witness of the Christian is not whether things in our life are smooth and great, because that’s not the “benchmark” Jesus reveals as being a witness of His (in the world you will have tribulation). But our witness will come from whether or not we find our peace and confidence in Him, while in the midst of trouble through faith. (Hebrews 11:6)
Fight the temptation to wait on better circumstances for “peace and rest”, while Jesus invites us to have it in Him. It is this internal peace and confidence with God that affirms Christ’s victory over Satan and the world, that He has made a promise for us to rest in. (Isaiah 26:3, Matthew 11:29, Hebrews 4:1-11)
