How are you specifically relying on the Lord? What are you doing that only makes sense if you are living by faith? If you can’t think of anything, you might claim yourself to be a Christian, but you are not pleasing to the Lord. (Hebrews 11:6)
Asa was a king of Judah (the Southern part of Israel after the split). Initially, he feared the Lord and relied on Him, and God did some amazing work through him. However, when he ot older, he made a treaty with a neighboring king in order to defend his country against Israel (the northern part of Israel after the split).
You may think that’s very logical and prudent for him to do that – making a treaty with another country to defend his own. But God is not pleased. God, through a prophet, rebukes king Asa for not relying on the Lord in this matter, but rather relying on a worldly means to achieve security. Yet, this is what everyone else did. A nation would make a treaty with another nation by paying for their service. However, this is not what God wanted His people to do. He wanted them to live by faith – relying on God – rather than sight – relying on worldly means.
If we examine our lives and see that no part of it requires faith, then the best explanation is that we are not in the faith.
I think there is a fine line between something making a “business” sense versus a faith move. I’m not suggesting that you do not save up or invest into retirement or anything like that, but consider what God has called you to that you are sticking to no matter what. Is there such calling?
Perhaps it’s the conviction to adopt a kid when it makes no financial sense.Perhaps it’s giving to the mission when you are struggling yourself.Perhaps it’s NOT relying on someone else when it would be easier to.
“For we live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7PH
