You may find it surprising that we are actually encouraged to reason/bargain with God.
I don’t mean by that we should tell God that if He will do such and such, we will do such and such. For example, if God will give us a 6-figure salary job, we will tithe. (We are supposed to tithe no matter what we make).
But I do mean that if we can present a good reason why God should grant our wish, God may hear it. For example, King David prays:
“What is gained if I am silenced,if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness?Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me;Lord, be my help.”Psalm 30:8-10
David gives a reason why God should allow him to continue to live. And that is because he praises Him. If he’s dead, then God will have one less person to praise Him. So, God will lose out if He doesn’t grant his wish!
Sly, you say? Not if David’s heart truly felt that way. David knew that he loved God and he was leading others to love Him. Therefore, it would be detrimental to God’s glory if he was dead.
Moses also reasoned with God. When God was about to destroy the Israelites in the desert, Moses reminds God that if He were to do so, other nations would mock Him and deride Him, taking away from His glory.
Abraham did the same. When God was about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham reasoned with God to bring the number down to 10 from 50.
But there is something in common with all these men. They all cared for the glory of God more than their own glory. If our heart is truly in the place to care for God’s glory more than anything else, then we can reason and bargain with God.
God cares about His own glory more than anything else. (And that’s a good thing!)
Live your life in such a way that you can bargain with God to sustain you for a long time  because that will glorify God more than if He were not…
