Let me share something weird about myself. When I was little, I didn’t really want to grow up. I remember when I was in 6th grade, about to go into middle school, I didn’t look forward to going because I didn’t want to grow up. Why? Because I knew that to grow up meant that I had to be independent and couldn’t rely on my parents to take care of me anymore. More than the prospect of gaining freedom, I thought about the prospect of losing security in my parents.
Although earthly-wise, it’s commendable (that we become independent), spiritually it’s the opposite. Growing in Christ means that we become more and more DEPENDENT on God. In other words, we become more child-like as we grow mature in Christ.
Jesus said, “Leave the children alone, and don’t try to keep them from coming to Me, because the kingdom of heaven is made up of people like this.” (Matt 19:14). But what is it about children that He wants us to become like? It’s their simple trust. On the very next passage, it speaks of the rich young ruler who was seeking eternal life but went away sad because he couldn’t give up his money to follow Jesus! In other words, he couldn’t simply trust God like a child would…
I was stunned to find that the story of the rich younger ruler that are in two other gospels (Luke and Mark), also have this episode of Jesus’ encounter with the children right before it. In other words, the gospel writers wanted us to see the contrast between the child-like dependence of a child and the self-dependent manner of the rich young ruler.
How would you live your life differently if you knew you had a Father who was over the moon for you and owns the world?
Find your rest in His secure arms. Like a child…
