Love is having no back-up plan.
What would you think of a man who has a secret girlfriend as a back-up plan while he is marrying another woman in case that marriage does not work out? What do you think of a woman who makes his fiance sign a prenuptial agreement before marrying in case the marriage doesn’t work out? They are not in love. They are in love with keeping their current status, but they are certainly not in love with whom they are marrying.
Loving God is having no back-up plan. What does that mean? It means that we are not adding anything else that we will trust in addition to God just in case God does not deliver.
In 2 Chronicles 25, King Amaziah of Judah, worships the gods of the land that he has just defeated! What sense does that make to worship the god that could not even defend its nation? But in Amaziah’s thinking, the more the merrier. He probably thought, “The Lord gave me victory over a pagan nation that serves other gods. So, why not add those gods to the Lord so that I have the Lord and other gods to work on my behalf? The more the merrier!”
He was seriously mistaken because God is a jealous God. He will not share His glory with another! (Isa 42:8). God refuses to be one among many. He must be the only one! You can read that Amaziah’s life did not end well. He lost his kingdom, and he lost his life…
We cannot serve God and money. We must choose one.
We cannot serve God and our children. We must choose one.
We cannot serve God and our friends. We must choose one.
We cannot serve God and worldly pleasures. We must choose one.
Am I suggesting that we get rid of all our money, children, friends, and pleasures? No. But they cannot be dictating our lives to interfere with serving God.
What or who makes you move?
Where and how do you spend your money?
What is your dream and aspiration for your children? (Worldly success or godliness?)
What is at the core of your friendship? (Would you ditch them if they moved you further from God?)
Do worldly pleasures bring you closer to Christ or move you further away?
Commit your ways to the Lord and only Him.
