One of the great advantages of living near a big city like Seattle is that my wife and I can go and listen to the world class musicians perform their craft at places like Benaroya Hall. The last concert we went to was one of my favorites – Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3. I counted a little short of 100 musicians playing so harmoniously and beautifully that nearly put tears to my eyes. And I wondered if earthly music played with earthly instruments is so beautiful, how much more beautiful and ecstatic heavenly music will be?
How would you like 4,000 musicians playing music at once? Imagine 4,000 instrumentalists and vocalists singing at the top of their lungs joyfully and skillfully. That is what king David gathered for the worship of God in 1 Chronicles 23:5. But that is nothing compared to the music we will hear in heaven. A multitude without number will be singing the song then!
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands (Rev. 7:9)
What is the subject of their song? Not about some girl. Not about the hardships of life. Not about a nation or war exploits. But about one man. One God. And we will realize that that’s what every love song had been leading up to. Every love story has been leading up to this person. Every desire – hunger, thirst, sexual desire, had been leading us to find their fulfillment in this Christ.
Do a little of it everyday. Sing a song to the Lord. The trees are singing to the Lord. So are the birds. Join them!
