1 Chronicles 13:11-13–And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzza to this day. 12 And David was afraid of God that day, and he said, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?”
I’v had the opportunity to speak to many people who genuinely know and love God, yet struggle with what God has allowed in their lives. Sometimes the disappointment removes them from the Church altogether, because it reminds them of the presence of God, in a time they are angry and hurting from what God has allowed/done…
When we look at this passage from King David, who we know loved God deeply (1 Samuel 13:14). We see him hurting from what God did in killing Uzzah, for touching the cart that held the ark of the covenant. Causing David to abandon it, though it symbolized the presence of the Lord. David abandoned what symbolized the presence of the Lord because he was hurt, confused, and afraid of what God did/allowed…
When confused and hurt by anyone, our natural defense is to abandon them, whether that is emotionally, physically, or spiritually. But what God needed David to realize, was that His holiness would not be compromised, and Uzzah did that and paid for it! The event also showed David that because God is Holy and Perfect, he must live and accept what God has done, which can be hard to accept when what God does hurts…
I believe every Christian who has been hurt by what God does/allows, learns that the essence of God is that He is God, He does what He pleases! (Psalm 115:3) Yet what “trips us up”, is that we try and define what is good to God, when in reality “good” is only in God Himself (Matthew 19:17).
David left afraid of God, and abandoned the Ark. Yet what makes us eventually embrace who God is, despite what He may have done, is that He is good. David realized that the presence of God blessed wherever it resided (1 Chronicles 13:13-14). Eventually David came around and was healed from his hurt to accept God for Who He is. But David was changed, because he learned how to walk with God in fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). Have you learned to walk with God like David? Or are you still trying to heal away from His presence in what He has done?
In His Love, Ld
