Have you noticed how we are just looking for someone to worship? Watching a documentary on Princess Diana on ABC, I am reminded once again how prone to worship we human beings are. The only problem is that we worship human beings.

So many of the TV shows and even social media are based on this theme of worship. What is the show America’s Got Talent based upon? Finding someone with a great talent to make him/her into a celebrity. And what do we do with celebrities? We worship them! We read about them on tabloids. We buy the products they endorse. We want to look like them. We want to BE them!

That’s because we human beings are made for worship. But we constantly worship the wrong thing – usually people. In my circle, prominent Christian writers or speakers garner that type of attention. C.S.Lewis, for example. But they are just people. Sinful, helpless, grace-needing, people.

The Apostle Paul was very aware of this when he wrote Galatians. By then, the apostles of Jesus had god-like status and the people were clamoring for them. But the way Paul speaks of them is almost a put down. Speaking of the “pillars” of the church: “And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God show no partiality) – those , I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me.” Gal. 2:6. And then he goes on to write them about confronting the head honcho of them all – Peter!

Paul held Jesus in such high regard that no one else really mattered. He wasn’t impressed by anyone. And why should he be? They were all in the same boat – sinful, hell-bound, and wretched.

Do not think of anyone too highly. Do not follow or listen to anyone more than you follow and listen to Jesus. This includes your faith-heroes.
