God takes our sin very personally. It’s not as if a child has made a boo boo, but as if His spouse has cheated on Him.

In Ezekiel 23, God describes the sins of Israel. And He personifies the nation Israel as a woman married to Him and her sins as committing adultery with multiple men! God speaks as a jilted lover, betrayed by His beloved, obviously hurt and angry over her betrayal.

But what was God so angry and feeling betrayed about? What did Israel do? Israel has adapted the ways of the neighboring nations and became pagan. They gave into idol worship and rituals that were forbidden. And God takes this very personally.

What would be equivalent to this kind of sin today that God would hate? Relying on and depending on anything other than God as our security and treasure. This could be our savings. This could our retirement account. A marriage to secure our future. Exercising daily to keep our body healthy.

Then, are we not to engage in all these at all? Yes, we are. The Bible says elsewhere that it is wise to save up for the future. It is good to get married. It is good to exercise our body to keep it healthy. But what we are NOT to do is to rely on them as the source of our security. After all, what good is it if we gain the world but lose our soul?

How do we know if He is the source? It’s how anxious we get in the prospect of losing our earthly security. If all our security lies in earthly goods we have amassed, then we will lose our head at the possibility of losing it all. But if our security is in God, even when the waves come, we will be at peace.

“Do not be anxious about anything. But in everything, by prayer and petitions, with thanksgiving, make your request known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6

I wish you peace that passes your circumstances.
