One of the worst consequences of sin is that we become animal like (or worse) – completely devoid of a moral sense, doing what once used to be unfathomable – such as eating our own children!

Because the people have forsaken me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods… I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his neigbhor in the siege and in the distress…” Jeremiah 19:4, 9

What kind of people eat the flesh of their sons and daughters? How desperate would you have to be to resort to that? “Never!”, we say! “We would rather starve to death than to eat our own children! We would give them our flesh if they are starving but we would never ever eat them!” That’s the response of a person in the right mind. But when the Lord curses, you are not going to be in the right mind. You will be so depraved and so stripped of any humanity, you will be like an insect who eats its own rather than be a human being…

We’ve read about these on the news. For example, a 16 year old boy overdosing on heroine and dying. But it was his mother and grandmother who gave him the drug and they were shooting up together when he overdosed and died! And when they discovered that he died, they tried to cover it up so that they wouldn’t get in trouble with the law! Unconscionable!

The worst thing that can happen to us is that God leaves us alone. When He leaves us, He’s leaving us to Satan, who will strip us of the dignity of being a human being. We will resort to desiring and living for the basest of instincts like an animal or an insect…

But the opposite is also true. When we align ourselves with God and live by the Spirit, we are being fully alive as we were meant to be. Our humanity will flourish and will become infused with the divinity to see, taste and commune with God!

You want to be fully alive? Deny yourself. Pick up the cross daily and follow Jesus.
