I just read an article on New York Times why it is so hard to keep our weight off after losing it on a diet. For example, most of the contestants on “The Biggest Loser” show gained it all back in just a few years after the show. The article said that it’s as if our body has a memory of how much we weighed before the diet and will do anything to get back to that weight! For example, our metabolism will slow down to a level less than before we started our diet so that our body can get back to the weight we were before! So, for those of you who have lost a significant amount of weight through a diet, it will be a bitter battle to the end to keep that weight off. Your body will fight you to get back to the weight it was before!

And how much is that like sin in our lives, I thought! After we have committed our life to Christ and been forgiven and cleansed by Him, our sinful nature fights us to the end to get back to the original state before Jesus. And it is a bitter fight to the end! If we are not fighting, if we are coasting, then we are losing! There should be a war within you against the flesh and sinful desire to keep them off!

For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Romans 8:13

How easy is it to gain weight? What do you have to do to gain it? Probably nothing! We simply drift into gaining weight. Only way to maintain our weight is to watch what we eat and burn as many calories as we eat. In the same way, if we are doing nothing spiritually, we are drifting into sin!

Fight it! Put it to death EVERYDAY!
