Sometimes despair sets in and we think to ourselves, “This is never going to change…” “This” could be a person, a situation, or even you!
Perhaps it’s your spouse who’s got a nasty habit as long as you’ve known him/her. Perhaps it’s your job/family situation you’ve been wanting to change for years. Perhaps it’s your own habit or sin that you’ve been fighting for months or years. And after a while, we are ready to give up, thinking, “It’s hopeless. I’ll never get out of this!”
But this is essentially an atheistic thought. We are discounting God when we think like this. We are giving in to the fatalistic thinking that no supernatural thing can happen.
But consider this: There was a point when this world didn’t exist. There was a point when you didn’t exist. There was a point when that person or that situation didn’t exist. And as surely as God lives, things will change.
That is what I’m getting when I’m reading the early chapters of the book of Acts, and the Holy Spirit came on the disciples to change everything! As far as they have been around, things were always the same. Their nation, Israel, has been under Roman governance for all of the disciples’ lives and they were desperate to get out from underneath. Before that, they were under Greek rule. Before that was the Persians. And before that was the Assyrians. And before that was…. It’s no wonder they probably thought things will never change. But it did! In the twinkling of an eye, things changed! Rome would be overthrown, a new era would begin where Christianity would change the world!
“If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” (Romans 8:11)
The same power that raised Jesus from the dead resides in you, if the Spirit of Christ is in you! Don’t ever give up. Stay faithful to the Lord. Keep hoping that God will bring about the change in you, in your loved one, and even to unfavorable conditions. He can perform miracles!
