Psalm 11:2-4,7
2 for behold, the wicked bend the bow;
they have fitted their arrow to the string
to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart;
3 if the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”
4 The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord’s throne is in heaven;
his eyes see, his eyelids test, the children of man.
7 For the Lord is righteous;
he loves righteous deeds;
the upright shall behold his face.
The Psalmist presents the wicked’s assault on the righteous, and how they go about attacking them in the dark, leaving the righteous to be vulnerable. Vulnerable because revenge is not what should rest in the heart and become the acts of the righteous. But the Psalmist then speaks directly to the vulnerability of the righteous, that the Lord is in His holy temple!
The Lord God sees and is in control of such a situation, that in what He permits, He tests the children of men with. He tests the faithfulness of the righteous, whether they will keep His Word and fight in the Spirit for His glory, or leave no distinction between themselves and the wicked…
The goal to remain steadfast in faith with a clear conscience, is to behold the face of the Lord. Beholding the face of the Lord and His glory assures us that we too are resting in the security of the Lord. Because now through Christ we become the holy temple in which the Lord rests in! (1 Corinthians 6:19)
Until heaven, it will be a battle to remind ourselves of where our security truly lies. A true fight in being a welcoming residence for the Holy Spirit, unmoved by the wicked, and undisturbed by our own rebellion!
