John 4:10-11–Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?
Jesus is trying to move “the woman at the well” from the issue she has with the limitations and boundaries society has placed on their historic interaction, to the reality of the real issue, which is her need for Jesus. She obviously doesn’t know who He is, so she has to keep the conversation on the level of what is natural, and what her past has dictated.
But a face to face with Jesus is never to limit us to what happened in the past, nor is it simply a revelation of the present. But here Jesus refers to meeting her ultimate need for life in this face to face encounter. Jesus knows that when she realizes who He is and ultimately receives Him, that she will no longer allow societies limitations or anything personal limit her from moving forward.
Had Jesus submitted to her limited thinking of what could happen, then no change could come about! This is the kind of deliverance God brings through faith, the possibility of things we had never asked or thought of! It is these kind of face to face interactions with Jesus that “tear off” our own limitations of what we can do for His glory.
Bondage never talks about what is possible, it must talk about what happened as a victim. A person in bondage cannot conceive of anything beyond what has happened, until they meet Christ, which is why He is life!
