It is so hard to focus on Christ with so many sources of distraction around. And it’s not only the number of distractions but also how easily accessible they are!
Before, at least when we were in bed, we had peace and quiet. But now, with cell phones and tablets, we bring our distractions even to our bed! Personally, I find it increasingly difficult to focus on any one thing without an impulse to check something online or play a game. It is definitely stunting our growth – our spiritual growth that is!
I recently read a book called Life of God in the Soul of Man by a puritan named Henry Scougal. It was a short book but he had such depth and knowledge of God that I began to wish that I only knew God like he did. He made me think of things of God that I’ve never thought of and this was written 300 years ago! But what’s flabbergasting is that he wrote the book when he was only 27 years old!
I’m beginning to discover that many of the theological treatises and books that shaped the world for centuries had been written by young men in their 20’s and 30’s. I’m in my 40’s and I don’t have anywhere near the maturity that these 20-somethings did….
Why?, I wondered. it’s gotta be all the times I spent on distractions. All the times I’ve been chasing after gadgets, watching games, Youtubing, etc.
I want to live the simple life. I want to be rid of all distractions so that I can focus on Christ and Christ alone. I want to remove the disgusting gunk on the glass of life so that Christ can be seen clearly.
A few things will need to be done intentionally for this to happen. I’m beginning to make a mental note on what I need to do. Please, do begin to plan what you will do to be less distracted so that you can focus on Christ.
It is not easy to glorify Christ. We must work at it…
