I’ve heard before a nation falls, the last vice it will get into is calling what is evil, good and what is good, evil. I cannot prove historically or biblically whether that’s true, but it must at least indicate that that nation is in such dire moral depravity that God would be righteous to judge it.

“God gave them over to shameful lusts… men abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” Rom. 1:27.

Homosexuality existed in the first century. It was rampant, as a matter of fact, in the Roman world that Paul lived in. But as far as we know, no country has ever tried to change the very definition of marriage.

The point of this devotional is not to get you to become politically active to stand against this evil (Which our world calls good). Although that would be advisable. (Dietrich Bonhoeffer stood against Hitler and his racist regime while the U.S. didn’t want to get involved until her hands were forced. Today, we would call Bonhoeffer intolerant and a political activist or even a failed assassin rather than a martyr that he was).

The point of this devotional is, is our heart breaking over the sins of our country? Are we aware how wicked we are? Are we asking for forgiveness for OUR sins? (Even if we are not personally responsible for those particular sins?) Do we pray as Jesus did, “Forgive them for they do not know what they are doing?” Do we grieve over the sins of our nation?

Only hope we have is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Nothing less than that can redeem this world.
