A man died this morning to save you! As you were on your way to work, an armed robber was approaching you from behind to take all you have and then kill you. But a man who saw this unfold, intercepted the robber, wrestled him to the ground. The robber fled but the man was badly injured, stabbed multiple times, and eventually died in the hospital. But you were oblivious to all this until his surviving wife came and told you!
What if this really happened? What if you were about to die this morning, but because of that man, you got to go to work, come home to your family and enjoy the rest of your life?
This scenario happened in 1 Samuel 25. A rich and foolish man named Nabal and his assets were being protected by David and his men. When harvest time came, David wanted Nabal to spare him some of his fruits, but Nabal totally shuns David. For this, David and his men were going to totally destroy Nabal and his household. However, his wife, Abigail, upon finding out what David is about to do, loads donkeys full of goods and pleads with David not to disgrace his own name by meddling with such a foolish man as Nabal, her husband. David relents because of her plea. But when Nabal finds out that he was about to die that morning, he falls over and drops dead of a heart attack anyway!
David represents God. Nabal represents us. God’s been good to us and has been protecting and providing for us. And yet, like Nabal did to David, we have shunned God and offended Him, thinking nothing of it. And for that, we were going to die. But Abigail who represents Christ, stepped in and pleaded for our lives. Abigail only sacrificed some food to plead with David. But Christ gave His own blood to plead for our souls. And God has relented. For 2,000 years. But how many people in this world know that the only reason the world is not burning up in fire and brimstone right now is because God’s Son intercepted and interceded on our behalf?
Make no mistake. God will come and judge those who are not covered by the blood of His Son. And it will be torment like they have never known. It is up to us, Christians, to tell them this!
