A few days ago I read a very interesting thread on a forum where people shared their stories on how they felt God’s presence at some point in their lives. These stories ranged from medical miracles to coincidental situations to a particularly emotional moment at a climactic point in their lives. Of course, since it IS the Internet, some stories were probably over-exaggerated or maybe even fabricated, but to dismiss all of the hundreds of posts in the thread as fake would be absurd.

To be honest though, my reaction upon reading this thread wasn’t exactly one of inspiration and awe. Rather, I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of jealousy reading these posts. Why hasn’t God done something like that for me? Time and time again, during the low points of my spiritual life, I’ve prayed to God countless number of times to give me some sort of sign or confirmation to let me know He is there for me; that this feeling of being so alone in this wold is just a feeling and nothing more.

Reading the book of Acts has only filled me with ever greater desire for signs. Could you imagine living in Jesus’s time when signs abe miracles were abound? So it’s still quite shocking to me that one of his very own disciples, Judas Iscariot, stabbed Him in the back. But all the hoping in the world will not bring me back to the times of the apostles.

However, I think I’m starting to realize the importance of daily devotions and taking time out of our busy lives to just sit down and pray. These times of spiritual droughts in my life also happened to be times where I slacked in spending time with God. And this applies for spending time with any loved ones in your life. The less time you spend with them, the more problems that arise in our relationships. I know in a lot of the devotions I’ve written, I always end it with a “To help us walk closer with God…”, followed by trying to apply the relevant Bible passage I brought into discussion. But nothing is more important or fundamental than just taking time out to spend time with God
