It is good to have God’s word near. If you are reading this, consider yourself blessed. Not because you are reading my devotional, but you have the word of God near you, which will protect you from being destroyed.
King Josiah “discovers” the word of God in the temple that had been neglected for years. Once he reads, it, he is distraught over his nation’s sins, repents, and makes drastic changes to himself and his nation. Seeing this, God relents and does not destroy the nation nor the king. He promises that the king’s life will end in peace, but the disaster will still come on the land after his time. (2 Kings 22:14-20)
Three takeaways from this passage:

  1. Discovering or re-discovering God’s word is God’s way of getting our attention to keep us from harm. If the word of God comes at you in a fresh way, know that God is trying to get your attention.(Including this devotional!)
  2. Once God gets our attention through His word, He expects us to make changes. If king Josiah didn’t do anything after hearing the word of God, he and his nation would’ve been destroyed. DO what the word says. (Throw out whatever hinders you from God!)
  3. But no matter how many changes we make to our lives (how good we get), it will not be enough. King Josiah completely overhauled his nation, but God still wasn’t satisfied. Only His Son, Jesus, can satisfy Him completely. Therefore, it won’t do good to simply make moral corrections, but relying completely on Jesus for our justification and sanctification.

How much better would it be if we never have to “re-discover” God’s word because we have never lost sight of it?
