Romans 13:14-But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
This may go without saying, but the more responsibilities we encounter the greater the capacity we need to handle them. As a Christian we are called not only to “endure” them, but also called to be effective for Christ sake. But that takes preparing our hearts and minds, that we not react in a way that is familiar to our flesh…
Of course this is not a “quick fix”. It takes constant practice and devotion, to examine whether or not I am handling situations effectively for the purpose of God? Our flesh is so instinctive, that reflection or consideration is not needed. So we then make the mistake, of dwelling on how we want to handle the situation, over what Jesus desires from us…
I remember some people criticizing the “WWJD” movement, which stands for “What Would Jesus Do”. But the criticism seemed unjust, because if people needed a bracelet or whatever to help them consider not “making provisions for the flesh”, than what could be the harm to consider WWJD? Especially if you are dwelling on how angry you are, and making provisions of what you may do from that anger, thinking about Jesus may be the best thing to do!
However “thinking” about Jesus, may be shallow for those who don’t read their Bible, pray, and meditate on seeing Christ through the Word. Spending time with Jesus helps bring us into the reality of eternity, why we are here, and who we are to serve and glorify. Such considerations bring us into the spiritual truth of our situations, instead of the immediate emotions of our flesh…
In essence, to have our hearts and minds saturated with Jesus, helps us humble ourselves and the “raging emotions” of our flesh. By not feeding our spirit, we are left to make provisions to do and say what we feel, and some of those things we can never take back! So we cannot afford to neglect our time in “putting on Jesus Christ”. Because the only other alternative is our flesh, which must be tamed to be effective for the glory of God.
In His Love, Ld
